It'd be hard for me to pick which is Mike Leigh's best character, but Poppy is certainly my favorite.
Mike Leigh, you do no wrong. Happy-Go-Lucky is an actor's movie and enjoyable every step of the way. It's dialogue driven, yet, in a strange way, all atmosphere. Keep 'em coming, Mike.
Wow. Poppy is Mike Leigh's best character. Incredible performance from Sally Hawkins. Incredible film. I'm a fool for not watching this sooner.
I loved the execution by Leigh, he's in a mood as crisp and lively as Poppy herself without compromising his talent at creating characters. And the ending is an exquisite dovetail, I can't think of a more original and fitting conclusion to this movie.
"You can't make everyone happy." "There's no harm in trying. Is there?" Maybe the world is too much for even the most dedicated optimist?
Absolutely incredible film. Could not turn away from it. I recommend it to friends all the time.
Sally Hawkins is a dream. The closest thing to Audrey Hepburn in a long time.
I actually recognized a very good friend and a school teacher in the main character. very refreshing approach to a comedy (drama?)
This movie's great! Hawkins makes happy convincing, and it's not just a total walk in the park, as "real world" concerns are effortlessly brought to the narrative fore in key moments. Poppy is such a wonderful person (she's more than a character, this one). She's effervescent and wonderfully random, and makes me absolutely head-over-heels for this picture. Absolutely fantastic.
I love how Mike and Sally wake up the audiences about the how real Poppy can become in real life.
This movie and Poppy make feel sooo happy and ease every time I see it. Awsome performances and script.
Simple touch of cheerfulness and sensibility. Absolutely great performance from Sally Hawkins & Eddie Marsan.
Mike Leigh deserves many award just for the diversity of his movies ! Never the same one twice ! Here is a rather light one after a really dark one.
The characters are real and played excellently with funny lines here and there. But I must warn you, Do not watch this if you have a headache. I was watching it with a headache, hoping that it'll cure it (being read the reviews about how warm and light-hearted this movie is). Unfortunately for me, my headache gotten worst.
I love a film that has little desire in resolving itself, but is more interested in the immediacy and ephemerality of moments, of accumulating details whether they constructs something or not, and in our experience of its characters. Happy-Go-Lucky is one of these films. It just sort of happens. It sticks in you somehow, even if you dont have any idea what you just watched. I've confronted so many vehemently angered reactions to this film and its "pointlessness," or "plotlessness," but i seem to be enamored of it for all those same reasons :)
