This film is about heartbreak. . At first, I thought it would just be about love and all the regular self-problems that come along with that. Instead, you see that Ho Po-Wing does love Fai, but in a codependent sort of way. There's not a clear cut reason for the two being together happy or otherwise---they just fall into and out of place, not the normal way but this is what happens when love is diff between two mates.

I would envy a love like theirs if it wasn't for all the pain

As if the hot water tap turns a bit cooler, the stormy relationship between Ho Po-Wing (Leslie Cheung) and Lai Yiu-fai (Tony Leung Chiu-Wai) sparks hot and cold in this bedroom drama set in a less-than-sunny and perpetually nocturnal Buenos Aires. Wong Kar-Wai's film about love on the edge near the world's edge has its cabin-fever lovers nearly shout "I can't quit you!" Christopher Doyle lenses its searing visuals.

i had to up it to five stars. the last thirty minutes were absolutely touching. buenos aries, iguazu falls, ushuaia, taipei, and the upside down hong kong all being bleak settings for loneliness and irony was just perfect. i agree with the comment below, first time i realized how similar gay and straight couples could be. not that i was ignorant to it, it's just that i really witnessed it with this film. great stuff.

Perfectly stated. I had to up my rating to five stars eventually as well. This movie stays with you long after it's done. My 2nd favorite WKW film.

I felt as if the audience drifted into the lives of the couple just as they drifted out of each others. While it didn't seem as organized and more controlled as some of his other films, the aimlessness to the film I think brilliantly reflected the main characters themselves.

Viewed this today for the first time. Wrote a blog entry about it. Mixed feelings on the movie. Great from a technical standpoint. The story didn't connect with me as much tho.

In a word: meh. It was made of nice little moments, but the story didn't go anywhere and the characters didn't seem to move. Also, narration was used more as a convenience in spots than for character insight (after seeing this and 2041, comparisons to Terrence Malick and Godard don't seem fair). At this point: 3 stars/5.

I'm adding this film to my list of favourites from Wong Kar-Wai. Set mostly in Argentina, this movie made me even more excited for my trip to South America next year!

Seeing this on the big screen at Miff 2011 was a real pleasure. It is an exquisite film , a true love story. Wong kar wai and Doyle make Buenos Aires look like you will never seen before. Best leung performance for me.

It's about disillusionment and life that must follow, even without that love which was believed to be eternal. As if eternity is only stored in the memory of the good things that brought us that feeling while still alive. www.cinemadebuteco.com

Happy Together is Christopher Doyle's best photographic direction, hands down. The colorful imagery, the black and white scenes and the music-video techniques also seen in Wong's previous films like Fallen Angels or Chungking Express made me love this movie even more. Damn fantastic.

How can a film with both Tony Leund and Leslie Cheung as leading actors not be good? In fact, this is so much more than just "good", this is painfully beautiful. I just gave it 4 stars because it isn't my favourite Wong film and I didn't quite like it as much as Chunking Express or In the Mood for Love.

After going through some of the same shit as both characters go through, this film becomes more and more relatable. And it was a hetero relationship too. Just a all around fantastic, brutally honest film.

Argie Great scenes. The takes on Buenos Aires are spot on. Excellent sound track ,well --you can't go wrong with Piazzola & Zappa and to top it all, Copes as a tango choreographer ! Loved this film !!!

Apparently Wong Kar Wai gave Tony Leung a fake script so when Tony arrived in Buenos Aires, he found out that one of the first scenes to be filmed was the gay love scene. Haha, good thing the final product came out so well.

It amazed me that this approached an honest, passionate relationship between two gay men. Usually, an air of discomfort or awkwardness hampers this type of relationship in movies but this film did a particularly good job of it.
