Dimulai dengan sebuah pertanyaan: Apakah film Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince ini masih layak ditunggu sejak Warner Bros. menundanya tujuh bulan lalu?

Bisakah Harry bertahan tanpa Dumbledore?

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has several issues that just drag it down, such as the uneven and sometimes disjointed storytelling and the focus on a certain irrelevant subplot. However, fantastic cinematography, extreme attention to atmosphere and detail, great (and surprising) acting by Michael Gambon, and the merciless Alan Rickman make this the best Potter film yet.

Half-Blood Prince is radically different than the other Potter films, especially Order of the Phoenix, in a way that it’s much more of an artistic film and is less toned down.

The new Harry Potter movie is a refreshingly enjoyable film. The best Harry Potter film yet, and also one of the year’s best Hollywood films. After so many adventures we finally get to just relax, to have fun along with Harry and the gang. The photography is beautiful as always and even subtle and delicate at times. The films best scenes are those that involve human interaction, like the “dinner party” scenes and the sexual innuendo is also very funny.
The movie in general belongs not to Potter or Dumbledore or any of the main characters, but to Draco Malfloy, Ron Wesley and the young Valdermont. I’m glad to see that other characters are being developed along with the main characters and that they are not just devices used to utter a line or two to advance the plot. And speaking of plot I’m almost in awe at how well and economically executed the film was. This is not a film for Harry Potter initiates, I think only after reading the book can you really appreciate all the things that you see in the film. The Room of Requirements and Mr. Wesley’s shop of muggle artifacts are really neat to look at, and you understand their significance better when you do.

The Harry Potter series has taken in a more mature and subtle directions that maybe its fans are not mature enough to appreciate. I welcome the change as a pleasant surprise.

This was not a very good version out of the book. But it’s impossible to include all the details which a book contains into a two and a half hour movie.

The book came with many answers on un-solved questions. Of course movies cannot be based upon the book 100%, but for the people who have not red the books, they will recieve less important details.

In my opinion, this was a bit boring movie, but because I’m a huge fan of the Harry Potter history, I had to see this movie.

Just hope the final movie will be better, and more like the book.

Never has a bunch of hormonal teenagers imbued with the Satanic power to tear reality asunder been rendered as so frustratingly dull. Everything was cloaked in grey horror and dreary misery, but it never built up, let alone climaxed — it was like watching a machine clank its gears until it needed to stop to refuel for the next movie. Even the comedy felt pretty color-by-numbers, although whatshisface Ron Weasley guy will probably be a great character actor when he’s older.

Technically superior craft and strong acting is met with apathy by a script that fails to capitalize on the book’s most crucial aspects, primarily a proper build-up of Voldemort’s back story via pensieve memories and a particularly egregious misstep in leaving out the climactic Hogwarts battle at the end; parts that are essential in establishing an effective dramatic arc. As it is, Half-Blood Prince becomes a misguided, unfocused entertainment, its narrative never settling on a single focal point but rather hop-scotching quite haphazardly between goofy teen romance and sinister overtones. An enjoyable addition to the Potter franchise, but without the book’s nuance.

best of the series so far. i’m not sure why others call this film boring; for me, the chris columbus ones were excruciating — the second in particular feeling much longer than even its ridiculously unnecessary 2.5-hour running time — whereas yates bothers to interpret the story, rather than just make an uninspired, wooden re-creation of the book. the younger actors have grown up and their skills have been noticeably honed; most of the older actors maintain the high quality we have come to expect from them. jim broadbent was a particular delight.

the added humor was much welcome, particularly in a series installment with such a dramatic conclusion. all in all i was very pleased, as, i think, will be anyone who sees this not in the hopes of having a life-changing experience, but because they enjoy harry potter. those who have never been fans and those who are rabid fans may both be disappointed.

Note: I have not read the book upon which this film is based, so I am incapable of comparing the source material and the film adaptation with specifics.

I would like to say first of all that I don’t hate this movie. In fact, I walked out of the theater satisfied for the most part. However, little of it has stayed with me, even half an hour after I got in the car to go home. It is a bit difficult for me to put my finger on what exactly it is that troubles me so much about this film and so many of the other Harry Potter movies. There is so much to enjoy, yet there is such emptiness. I figured Order of the Phoenix was a step in a different direction, a tight production that was as concerned with making a good movie as presenting the source material. However, it was a deviating film in a series that is, for the most part, lacking in true inspiration and passion. The Half-Blood Prince appears to me a product of corporate greed, and most of its flaws stem from the consequent obligations.

There are unforgettable images in this film. After all, there are few scenes more haunting than the candles in the Hogwarts hall being snuffed out at the climax, Bellatrix joyfully strolling down the tables and kicking the plates and silverware. (The horror of any sequence involving the Death Eaters makes me scratch my head as to why the MPAA rated this film PG.) The Harry Potter films are no doubt full of visually impressive set pieces. However, the different scenes do not always come together in the end as a cohesive whole. It feels as if the special effects are empty, perhaps because too many details of the source material were left out.

The romantic subplots surprisingly did not water down the most recent film as they did in the often horrifically beautiful Goblet of Fire. The different relationships give a sense of context to the characters and remind us they are essentially high school students. They are not merely chess pieces on a board, moving to the beat of the drum determined by them years ago by J.K. Rowling. It is in these sequences that we see the characters experience things like jealousy, heartache and pain. It is also apparent what a long ways these actors have come, understanding their characteristics yet offering a sense of depth.

What really brings the film down is the sense of obligation that holds it back, or rather what got it made in the first place. Let’s face the truth: the sense of wonder has worn off a bit. There is less of a sense of warmth in these characters. Yes, Hermione is excited upon hearing about Harry Potter’s arrival, yet her reaction seems forced and obligatory. Their friendship means less to us then it has in any of the other films, and although I understand this film is about Harry and Dumbledore more than anything else, the relationships amongst these young characters are so crucial. We are so wrapped up in the plot points that we forgot the characters and the magical world they live in are what stole our hearts in the first place. As someone who has not read the book, it seems they have reenacted the story but not necessarily brought it to life.

This is the only film in the series that felt like its running time, yet I felt like there more that needed to be done with the movie. Is that an absurd paradox? Not really. It all comes back to the corporate greed. Out of an obligation to finish the series and with the knowledge that these films will make money regardless of whether or not they are as great as Order of the Phoenix, the producers don’t ever have to worry that perhaps Rowling’s sprawling cannot be adapted without more serious care if at all. The memories with Tom Riddle, the climax and even the performances are proof that they had the time and energy to make something truly great. But as long as the general public (myself included) sucks on the corporate teat, those with the resources don’t have to think harder about what they are producing.
