It is somehow much more natural, and it may have to do with the fact that there are more scenes outside the castle. In the same vein, the cinematography is excellent. This is a perfect revival for the series.
In my opinion, this is the best film of the series. It has the best direction, and Cuarón’s signature style is discernible. As opposed to Columbus’ tired and trite style, this film is much fresher and flows much better than the two previous films. The art direction is unique and creative, and the filmmakers completely revamped what was an unimaginative magical world.

This would have normally gotten 4 stars but I gave an extra star for Alfonso Cuaron, his directing on this film was amazing and inspiring.
It's pretty sad to remember this film and realize what the Harry Potter series could have been. Nothing spectacular, sure, but something that could be entertaining, mature and have a distinctive feel to it - in no other HP film is the magic really believable (or actually serves a purpose). Cuarón was an inpired choice and turned the characters into humans; it's the only movie where I cared one iota about Potter.
On the downside, it has that disregard for a coherent plot that would be the hallmark of the sequels. The Goblet of Fire squandered all that had been done here, and they just kept repeating the same mistakes afterwards. Lazzy, combustion-oriented, money-grabbing crap would be all we would get.
by far my favorite harry potter film. the direction is wonderful, the story is engaging and gary oldman is fantastic
Still the best of the franchise in my opinion, bringing to the table everything that works in the rest of the films and adding a visual flare that the rest of the series is lacking. It's not just that what Alfonso Cuarón does with his camera is pretty or striking, it's that what he does adds to the series and fits so perfectly. Things are too murky to start out with story wise, but that's a very minor complaint...
This one would have to be my second favourite in the series, the story line gets a lot more interesting in this one. The first two I found were very boring and just kept going and going.
This is only appreciated so much because its directed by Alfonso Cuaron. If you look past the director's credit, there's not much that's actually "exciting" or different from the other films in the series.
This is very, very wrong. PoA is a vast improvement over the first two. The story, the acting, the direction, the cinematography, the screenplay, the camerawork, the editing, the special effects, the music, the pacing... EVERYTHING is better.
^ "This is only appreciated so much because its directed by Alfonso Cuaron"... So what, what else could it be? I must agree with Mysterious F: "EVERYTHING is better." Cuarón gave it magic, the film is magical itself, and that's what the HP world is all about: magic. There's nothing to do with "excitement"... and yes, that cinematography is quite something. PoA is the best of the series, period.
Best direction ever in the series!! It carried the undertone of mischief and acid that the series did in a way that moved past the Dickens of the first two. The soundtrack was hands down perfect! And we began to see harry as a teenager and not a boy...My favorite of all!! I am a happy potter movie fan, purist.
The soundtrack to this movie, is one of the best in the last 10 years. It is unforgettable, as well as the time-traveling and performances from its young lead actors.
This still stands for me as the best HP film. It's saddening Cuaron didn't direct all the installments - his style and vision are such a perfect match to Harry Potter's world!! HP3 is honestly the only one among the series that leaves me impressed still. Cuaron knew how to keep the pace up whilst putting enough attention on the crucial bits regarding the book's plot - something David Yates has woefully failed in.
