As an introduction the the series, this film does its job. The beginning is magical. There are few other moments as wondrous in the series as the introduction to Hogwarts, but soon after the awe begins to wash away, the film grows more and more tiresome. However, it is not a problem with the source material; the book deals with the plot marvelously. It is the adaptation where the problems arise.
Hindered by less than satisfactory direction, the plot becomes unbelievable and tired. It appears as though the filmmakers tried to fit the story within a standard Hollywood blockbuster narrative. Plot-wise, the trio’s actions and conviction in this film that Snape is after the stone seem unfounded and eventually ridiculous. The film suffers from a mediocre and unimaginative production design. There are a few elements that are spot-on, but the majority of the magical world is boring, seeming as though the art department based its designs off stereotypes and cliches. Some of the special effects are similarly not well executed this takes one out of the story. One of the best atributes of the film however, is the amazing casting. Every character fits perfectly and this helps set up a great series.
