As an introduction the the series, this film does its job. The beginning is magical. There are few other moments as wondrous in the series as the introduction to Hogwarts, but soon after the awe begins to wash away, the film grows more and more tiresome. However, it is not a problem with the source material; the book deals with the plot marvelously. It is the adaptation where the problems arise.
For the longest time I ignored Harry Potter...until I saw the trailer for this and I immediately got the books and read all that was available at the time and loved them. To my surprise, I loved this movie as well and was shocked at how faithful both to the word and in spirit as well. Wonderful direction and performances, great FX, awesome music, and a well told story. I still feel that way to this day.
first impression, and I just fall in love with Hogwarts.
The origin of the mith :D
It's interesting how Harry Potter has changed. The gross-out jokes turn into blood, the tone of music becomes less Spielbergian, the happiness turns to gloom, the characters and themes become less cartoonish, and Hermione turns from cute to hot. What a way to grow up with the kids with the kids who watch it.
The CG is shockingly bad in places, the story is just okay, but I still had a good time with this. The key is in the actors, they make the best of every scene ad hide the flaws that the film is riddled with...
Never been a fan of Columbus' installments in the series, as opposed to the later, more implicitly auteristic films - they're bland, stylistically expressionless and by-the-numbers. He refuses to do anything the least bit interesting with the material, and - for one who directed my childhood favorite Young Sherlock Holmes - seems to forget what's so great and fun about kid's boarding school mysteries to begin with.
Worst film of 2001, If it really was an english film (or british if that word must be used) then the right choice would have been Terry Gilliam, like Rowling had wanted.
This was the best potter movie by far.
Ugh modern humans... It's HARRIUS POTTER ET PHILOSOPHI LAPIS. :(
Ugh Americans... its PHILOSOPHERS not SORCERERS :(
oh, c'mon it is "Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone", it was changed to "Sorcerer's stone" for USA audience only..
Didn't Steven Spielberg want to do this animated? That would have been better.
I love Harry Potter and this movie too. This isn't one of my favourites movies but I love so so much since I was a child. I know all the dialogues of the movie because I have seen thousands of times!! The director, Chris Columbus, have adapted the movie correctly and it's a good entertaiment for all audiences.
