Brilliant and beautiful. Hero has some of the most beautiful cinematography I have ever seen, but I expect nothing less from Zhang Yimou. Yes, it is highly historically inaccurate, and, yes, it does not stack up to Yimou's earlier films, but it's entertaining as hell. Like Scorsese, Yimou knows how to create a finely crafted genre film that's both classic but fresh and exciting.
The most beautiful wu xia movie and the "rashomon" style storyline is very engaging
A star-studded, visually delicious romp told with a distinctive (dare I say somewhat officious) Chinese voice. CH!, I agree. That's not keeping me from loving the hell out of it though. A good movie night: Watch this and Valhalla Rising back-to-back.
I've always been captivated by movies about antiquity. I can see any trashy film dealing with the Trojan war, the burning of Rome or the erection of the Great Pyramids. Now Zhang Yimou tells us, in HERO, the last attempts to stop the first unification of China. In front of the King of Qin, who's depicted more like a progressive George Washington than a conquering Napoleon, HERO's heroes gain our esteem because of the worthlessness of their actions. A brilliant movie, a masterpiece. Respect.
I saw this 6 years ago with my dad before shipping out to Iraq. Although visually stunning and well put together, it was quite complex upon first viewing since my mind was more focused on the upcoming deployment. Watching it again with my mind clear, I now have a new found appreciation for this film.
Adoro la participación de Doyle.. fotógrafo estupendo y evidente la dirección de fotografía, algo muy bien logrado.
Crap Monster you’re not alone. This film was just a Chinese kitsch version "Triumph of the Will". Furthermore, countless copycat acts ("Three Colors trilogy" and "Rashomon" for example). I rather watch Wong Jing’s worst commercial trash than this nuclear waste again.
