The misrepresentation of the true story would border on offensive (all white upstart school beats all black powerhouse?) were it not so earnestly made and honestly performed. Too bad there hasn't been a movie made of the all-black school that their opponent was based off (Oscar Robinson's Crispus Attucks high school, the first all-black school to win state champion in any sport- who never did play the Hoosiers)
A timeless film that shows the power of director Anspaugh through the remarkable performances of Gene Hackman and Dennis Hopper. Hopper is brilliantly realized through gesture and pose while Hackman is boisterous and charismatic as the tough as nails coach. Actors of this caliber remind us of how they became house-hold names while instilling hope that this new generation of pretty faces can learn from the past.
