In a chance meeting Gilles (Patrick Dewaere), a loser with a loser best friend, meets “the most beautiful woman he’s ever seen” (Catherine Deneuve). Lucky for him she’s on the rebound after losing her boyfriend. Gilles courts the beautiful Hélène, a doctor at the local hospital. He pouts and manipulates his way into her life. He springs random trips on her and demands that she leave work because of an emergency; he hits her; he becomes obsessed with he dead boyfriend.

It is the first of several collaborations between André Téchiné and Catherine Deneuve. On the balance its bad points outweigh its strong points. The score is nice but not particularly memorable. Ultimately, the films lacks heart, and rather than a story, the narrative is driven by a bullet point list of events.
