elaborate? i haven't seen it, i want all your details.
Stick with it-it takes some time to find its footing but the latter half is a confident, stirring snapshot of a very important moment in American art history. And of course it goes without saying that Franco delivers a fantastic performance.
Awful animations, and the rest seems sometimes irrelevent but James Franco reading Howl is really intense !
If Ginsberg knew of this film, he would howl at it. And not in a good way. What do the animations achieve besides distract one from the poetry? Produced like a Hollywood film and looks like one.
I liked this film. I just wish they went with charming hand-drawn animation, rather than the gross CGI.
Like the offspring of a PBS educational program and an HBO special. I felt indulgent during the acting, since it wasn't explicit edu-programming. I was moved by the graphic rendering of Howl, and, yeah, a little indulgent there as well.
I really liked the film, and the performance from frames franco as Allen Ginsberg... the film itself was really good too! directed in a unusual and beautiful way! recomend it
Just think about how much more impactful the poetry would be if we just sat in a room and watched a man read them instead of watching these childish music videos.
Liked the animated parts where the poems are recited. At other parts it certainly got a little boring.
Pointless. Says things about Ginsberg we already know. No surprises and nothing new. Very boring. I suggest you read his poem instead.
I think this film was worth seeing especially if you're into Ginsberg, the beats, or know of the poem but I felt it was slightly boring. I'd really enjoy seeing Franco portray Ginsberg's life because those stories would be worth an hour and twenty four minutes of my full attention. Three and a half stars if i could.
Watched this with my wife last night- We had a lovely viewing experience accompanied by a bottle of cabernet...now empty bottle. Great just listening to the poetry and letting the illustrations wash over us.
An okay movie. I give it two stars because of the idea of reading the poetry in the movie, with that right kind of energie as it deserves. and because of the beautiful animation going along with the reading out loud poetry, beautiful. But the rest, with courtroom and lawyer and all that fucking american bullshit is ruining the movie! And of course the actor, James Franco is just not right for this part.
Very enjoyable film - Franco puts in a great shift as Ginsberg, and the interview and trial scenes are nicely done. The only problem for me was the animation, which was tacky and too obvious, and distracts ones attention away from the actual spoken words of the poem.
Anyone who really followed the beats would churn in clumsy disappointment at this work of plastic gummy bear fabrication.
what an incredibly disappointing movie. what were they thinking putting those shitty animation scenes in? why didn't they just make a documentary. i think i would have liked that more.
I was kind of disappointed because James Franco did such a great job, but direction failed in so many aspects, including in the animations scenes which are endlessly boring and totally unnecessary.
I LOVE this film. So amazing in so many ways. There are so many subtle understated intellectual discussions going on. Pay attention to the juxtaposition of the two different readings of Howl. Pay attention to how the animation makes you feel and how it may or may not reflect the beatnik way. Oh and go get the dvd it has awesome special features and the cover is great
