Not perfect but a good start. There will be those who complain that the character is superficial and that the style is pretentious; and those two comments are valid to some extent, but they do not subtract from the result. While the film is about a superficial teenager who spends half the film screaming at his mother, the deeper message and convoluted relationship are more mature and conveyed intelligently.
Wonderful original soundtrack and film at such a young age, even if I had some difficulties with the quebecen accent :)
"I do not love my mother, but at the same time, i can't stop loving her". This quote was in my head. And it still makes me think ...even months after seeing the movie.
Classical story of olden days: son "hates" mom (the catching title standing for:"I grew up to be a MAN, mom! Get off my case!").Sounds fresh & poignant (pugnacité FTW). I can relate to his mother's feelings as I can relate to Xavier's, that's when talent is playing a part. And it's obvious he's no kid. Cannes welcomed him. He's more than the hype. Let's hope be beats it and rises above the great expectations' burden.
a beautiful and real portrait of the relationship between a gay teen and his mother.
A drama that spirals out of control under the tightly woven narrative of Dolan's direction. Outstanding for its performances, poetry and eulogy for childhood. Probably the freshest and most thought provoking debut since Godard's 'Breathless'.
All the superficial hipster boys love this film. This is the guy that's going to save cinema? Really?
Previous thoughts on this wall are way off. This is a lovely, brilliant coming-of-age film that deals with big themes of contrasting familial responsibility and independence. The cinematography and direction is immaculate for any director, never mind one just 19 years old. Heartfelt, emotional, resonant and deeply affecting, this one is well worth your time.
Dolan has watched about 4 films in his life and though 'hey, it is cool to be a 'filmmaker'... a made this crap.
A very disappointing film--I agree with Rafael. It involves a teenager complaining about his mother and screaming at his mother in a stereotypically teenage, dull and inarticulate manner.
Hubert is an emo gay. He is screaming all the time and it's disturbing (not in a good way). If you are gay, 12 y.o. and hate ur mother, you gonna love this movie.
This wasn't as good as Dolan's second outing with Les Amours Imaginaires. Don't get me wrong, I still loved J'ai Tue Ma Mere, but this was decidedly harder to watch. I eagerly await his third film, whatever and whenever that may be.
For Canadian aficionados (and, incredibly, there is still no English-subbed DVD out in Canada), the film will be available on Movie Central (western Canada) beginning September 1st and The Movie Network (eastern Canada) beginning September 5th, with English subtitles in both cases. The film will also receive a limited theatrical release in the United States this fall.
There are no subs on the net. All you can do is learn French and watch it,not that its really worth it imo.
There are no subtitles, at all? In any language? French, english... Portuguese, spanish?
