Ha! I agree.
An absolutely amazing movie. I'm shocked at how much I enjoyed this. The twists and turns in the story are fantastic and impossible to detect. Jim Carrey gives one of the best performances of his career (its great to see him in a film that isn't absolute crap these days) and Ewan McGregor's fantastic as well! Also, the surprising thing about it was how emotional it gets. Among the best comedies of the last decade.
One of those hidden little gems that sometimes just lies between the main stream and the independant and gets lost. Carrey and McGregor have such a natural chemistry that one completely buys into the relationship. Would seem far fetched if it wasn't mostly true. North American distributors again showed their inherent homophobia in not giving this a proper release. Mismarketing killed the limited release it did have.
The Wikipedia article about Steven Russell was actually more interesting than this film.
Suffering from a complete identity crisis this attempt at documenting the life of con man Steven Russell does nothing much other than highlight what a complete narcissist he is. Perhaps that's the point of the film, however, no real substance is developed to explain him or his life. Carrey gives an uncomfortable turn, nailing the contradiction that is Russell, and he's nicely if a bit wetly supported by McGregor.
The star here is Ewan McGregor, not Jim Carrey, and the movie gets an extra point just for his acting. Apart from that, it's has nothing outstanding, it is not a bad movie: it is nice, with nice moments..but that's is just it: it is a "nice"movie.
I had low expectations for this one but it was actually a pretty good flick all things considered.
Is 300 on the Related Films list because it is also GL&B cinema? That would make sense, I suppose.
Jim Carrey's performance reminded me a little of "Man On The Moon", but he was amazing in this film. Nevertheless, the real star here was Ewan McGregor, who keeps on showing us the great actor he is. Very entertaining and sweet movie, became a favorite of mine almost immediately.
watching right now this movie...ABSURD! but mcgregor and carrey are terrific! amazingly surprising.
I strongly disagree that this Jim Carrey's performance is something to remember. I Love You Phillip Morris - in one of very few cases in which the Portuguese title can better encompass the theme of the movie more than the original title - has little relevant plot, if not involved a homosexual relationship. It serves at least to remind us that Ewan McGregor (not Carrey) is a good actor.
I Love You Phillip Morris operates on the assumption that we are going to like the story because however improbable, it is based on true characters and actual events. Sadly, reality does not surpass fiction in this case as what amounts to two hours of silliness encased in the wrapper of a gay romantic comedy. -more- http://rorydean.wordpress.com/2011/04/23/i-love-you-phillip-morris-2010/
A very atypical film in many ways: Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor are perfectly cast but in the oddest manner and the entire premise is silly until you realize it's actually happened. Actually a rather intriguing story and definitely a refreshing production of a biopic (which, while cherished, can be formulaic).
Soon to be appearing on Logo TV's movie of the week, the film suffers from what most LGBT films do: mediocrity. A few laughs here and there, a con movie without a good con, and what is Ewan McGregor doing in this movie? The only light here is Leslie Mann, who can take a drab role and glitz it up. Oh, this is not Jim Carrey's most audacious role- just because a straight guy is playing gay does not make him audacious.
i haven't watched a jim carrey film in years but this was pretty funny. aside from ewan mcgregor's terrible accent...
Better than Milk, better than A Single Man. I so mush enjoyed it. And McGregor he was outstanding!
For the many forms of comedy on display here (and the fact that so many of them hit right on target), for Jim Carrey's wonderful lead performance and Ewan McGregor's irrepressibly sweet and gentle Phillip Morris, for its sheer entertainment factor--four stars. An unexpectedly genuine romance with dramatic twists is just a bonus.
