This film seems to have been woefully underrated by many. As in his debut, Closely Watched Trains, Menzel whips sex, satire, and lighthearted, old-fashioned comedy into a wonderfully absurd little confection. His wry humor is unique and an absolute delight, and he beautifully evokes the splendor and decadence of the interwar years with dreamy, sumptuous hotels, resorts, and feasts. While it may not be the most realistic, this film is likely the most entertaining depiction of the history of twentieth century Europe you could possibly watch.
