Import/Export(2007)-10/10->Import/Export is a bleak and tough film about life, never expressed from an optimistic point of view and the camerawork only helps the film get more bleak by showing us beautiful, yet miserable paintings.Raw,yet brilliant work.
This film is outstanding on every level. Seidl's commitment to his characters is something we rarely ever see in contemporary "indy" cinema. Import Export signals the arrival of a major European film maker whose vision and depth makes his compatriot Hanneke seem like a contrived nihilist. I unerstand that the unforgettable scenes in the Alzheimer ward have triggered controversy as to the degree to which Seidl may have behaved unethically in order to get what he wanted. But the result on the screen speaks for itself: the moral focus stays firmly on the flickering light of the main female character's compassionate nature, a tenuous ray of hope in a broken world. One of the most important films of the past decade, without a doubt.
Roy Andersson mixed with Kieslowski's "Dekalog"- with a small dose of Haneke's cruelty. Seidl's "IMPORT / EXPORT" has some heartbreaking moments I will never forget. And I share Viktor´s opinion, "I believe he makes these films to try to change the world, and for that i admire him greatly".
In a globalized, consumer society, humans have become a product. Everybody have a price, everybody can be replaced, imported and exported. Ulrich Seidel has a great talent for showing us painful truths, but not without compassion and warmth for the humans involved. I believe he makes these films to try to change the world, and for that i admire him greatly.
Walking around in Slovakia and Ukraine with Pauli is just like exploring Pandora with 3D glasses for the first time. The surroundings, the people and the way they behave are so far away from what most people are used to, making it so incredible to watch. How bad and nasty can it get?! Reversed escapism at its finest.
Rare good "drame de moeurs". Loved the hospital scenes and the absurd transitions with unhealthy "picking up girls with no self esteem". Beautiful colors and shots.
In his latest effort, Ulrich Seidl goes far beyond pure provocation. It is still not an easy film to like but not one to leave you cold either: the characters are just too real and uncomfortably close to you. A disturbing but honest film that provokes strong reactions and crosses the line between fiction and documentary.
