It Is The State Of Man

Nick Rays fifth feature as a director established him as a legitimate “cause celebre”. In a Lonely Place strikes all the pertinent chords of the Film Noir genre violence, romance, tragedy. Dixon Steele as played by Humphrey Bogart encompasses all that man should be both ferocious and eternally romantic. This film contains suspense and intrigue but both devices are merely trifles to fill the plot the real star is the wide range of emotions the characters provide.Strained romance is not uncommon in film but rarely does it provide more personality. The only performance by Humphrey Bogart that the common man can relate to other than if you are a drunk relating to him in African Queen or a gold miner in Treasure of Sierra Madre. Gloria Grahame is passable with a few glimpses of magnificence.Art Smith is satisfying as typical hollywood Jew agent Mel Lippman .It contains the most depressing and incredible quote of all time Dixon Steele: “I was born when she kissed me. I died when she left me. I lived a few weeks while she loved me.” You must see this film if you like to be sad and alone and terribly sentimental and romantic.
