Synopsis

An out-of-work actor on the verge of a nervous breakdown decides to put on a production of Hamlet in a church. At Christmas. Despite admonitions from his agent and sister about the career suicide he’s about to commit by investing in such a morbid play over the holidays, he pushes on to realize his goal. Faced with a series of challenges and cast of misfits and oddballs, the troupe crawl towards opening night, discovering love, laughter, and friends along the way. —IMDb

Perhaps the best-known Shakespeare interpreter of the late 20th century, Kenneth Branagh began his career in a golden haze of critical exultation. First a star pupil at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (one of Britain’s most prestigious drama schools), then a promising newcomer on the London stage, then hailed as “the next Olivier” for his 1989 screen adaptation of Henry V, Branagh could, for a long time, do no wrong. Unfortunately, a string of bad luck, catalyzed by his disastrous Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein in 1994, began to tarnish the halo that had hovered above the actor/director’s head. His lavish, four-hour Hamlet in 1996, however, did much to further his status as a man who knew his Bard, helping to alleviate some of the disappointments that both preceded and came after it.

The Good Companions revisited. Amiable enough but goes in no particular direction apart from putting on a show in that proverbial barn. A very undemanding little scherzo enlivened by ripe ham. One could categorise into a sub-genre of sorts: the 'holiday' picture where directors attempt to have a bit of frivolous fun between more substantial fare. Maybe that means Michael Bay will tackle Ibsen during his.
