Something I have come to appreciate is a re-experiencing of a work that becomes a creative process that inspire thousands of ideas. This is one those works. I feel a very strong connection with Jose Luis Guerin, like a kindred spirit.
An elusive, mysterious, and masterful film. Utterly immersive in its images and sounds, as well as haunting and lonely. Many adjectives can be attributed to this masterpiece.
A beautiful film that is as much about the beauty of Strasbourg and its people as it is about Sylvia. Like all good urban-set films, the city and its inhabitants are inseparable.
A sublime and hypnotic tale of a young artist who returns to Strasbourg 6 years after meeting a young woman named Sylvie in hopes of reconnecting with his lost love. IN THE CITY OF SYLVIA is a languid and intoxicating journey through Strasbourg, meditating on memories and missed connections. A beautiful and powerfully romantic cinematic poem.
A stunning film of rare beauty. The design of the frames, the sound scapes, the varying forms in faces, the naturalistic elements all concoct together to form a real sense of place in which story, character and plot are irrelevant as you become fascinated by how everything feels and the potential stories of the inhabitants of this beautiful city. Incredible film.
It has a few good moments, no doubt. Beautiful photography too, I'll give it that. Kinda reminds me of The GoodTimesKid; difference being that while I'll recommend that to anyone and everyone I know, I wouldn't this film. I'm sorry, but for the most part, this was boring as fuck.
You can really feel life breathing into each image as it lingers on the screen. And it happens completely autonomously, which is the greatest miracle of this film. Guerin triumphantly captures the patient gaze of the artist, while crafting a passable story framework. But I am with Javier, there's a bit too much concentration on "beauty".
While watching the film, I couldn't decide who is prettier- "Sylvie" or the guy.
i agree with you vahid, the first 20 minute was awesome, in fact, the whole movie was wonderful.
Overwhelming in it's slow pace and mystery. Guerín must be one of the best Catalan directors out there.
Such a compelling film, how we get lost in our dreams and our entire reality becomes defined by them.
How come when some pretty boy European does this kind of stuff, they make a great film out of it, but when I do it, the cops arrest me for stalking?
This film has a splendid cinematography, beautiful shot, but from my perspective that s not satisfactory. The entire film lacks the shape of a great movie, lacks the mistery and lacks a cast( for instance the woundering artist seems to me a little unapropiate). Altough In the City of Sylvia seems a interesting title that s about all.The pursuit it s shalow and it s non evocative style doesen t have the artistic effect. José Luis Guerín want s to be adroit but fails.
Through the film's form and soundscape, Guerin leads viewers to believe that his camera and boom mic merely observe daily life. However, if one probes further, it becomes evident that the film wears many layers of intricate construction, from the meticulous sound design to the world class cinematography. I am very glad that I had a chance to rewatch this.
One of my favorite discoveries of 2007. Everything is just sublime. From the pacing, the mise-en-scène, the cadrage, the montage, to the sound design and the performances. Sit back and enjoy.
Yes, a great film, which has been described as Vertigo meets Last Year in Marienbad. Actually another film it reminded me of is Robert Bresson's Four Nights of a Dreamer, which I only saw on a poor copy of a video from Australian TV, where it was screened about 20 years ago.
I loved the "extras" in this films, to the people on the streets to the goth chicks in the club, all fantastic. The linguring conversations as well where a voyeurs dream. Perfection, I say.
beautiful town,(strassbourg) beautiful young people, beautiful film. it invites the viewer to revel with the characters in the sheer wonderous beauty of everyday goings on. a minor masterpiece that i can't seem to stop thinking about.
this is the film i always longed to make ... absolute perfection ... i can retire now and become a landscape gardener ...
