yes, Oshima is such an uninspired director; give me a break.
Senses has gained such widespread status that people forget to call this film what it is--hard core porn, albeit the most masterfully directed hard core porn ever. This film lacks the political, social, and historical context that it needs to make all the sexual perversion anything but gratuitous.
A brave, focused and fully realized work of art. I believe Oshima crosses the right boundaries to treat the difficult subject of sexual obsession in proper light, seduced in part -and as always with his work- to "defile" the japanese film tradition and also to share insights on sex as both a filmic narrative device and, when taken to its limit, as a potentially degenerative element of our mind, body and soul.
the most interesting thing in this film is its story and its study of japanese repressed society. but all the rest is just not inspired, specially the direction.
Haunting performances, gorgeous composition. Walks a thin line between surrealist pornography and a story of perversion. (IV/V)
Considering that 99.999% of the screen time is taken up by the actors having sex, the storyline seems to be lacking . . . Also, makes The Antichrist look like a Disney movie.
A searing portrait of sexual obsession set as Japan descends into imperialism, Nagisa Oshima's IN THE REALM OF THE SENSES is a shocking and sordid, yet strangely tender tale of unconventional love that slowly becomes dangerous. Based on a true story, the film remains banned in its home country of Japan for its fearless depictions of sexuality.
'In the Realm of the Senses' is a brilliant movie. More of a study of passion than a turn-on. Oshima's later movie 'Taboo' is excellent and very beautiful.
I'm surprised so many commenters here are turned off by the sex. Not to say it was a turn on, but in the context of the film, it was quite believably passionate.
it's tough to watch... the characters were so detached you hardly feel for any of them. And the sex scenes were rough, not sure why this becomes a classic ?
Like most pornography, lots of sex scenes amidst a very poorly told story. At least porn knows what it is, this film is just a waste of time.
Personally I would have liked less conventional sex and more weird, fucked up things. I'm just saying...
What an expereince!!! I really can't get over it... It's one of the few best love stories ever told. It's truthfull and intense!!
an intensely, explicitly, sexual film, but also a haunting and vivid portrayal of obsession, nonconformity, voyeurism, and aimlessness
GOD!!!!!! After being stuck on my DVD case for like 4 months I finally watched it on private!! Very very good film! Highly recommended for people who are not perverts... hahahaha...
An extremely intense portrait of a love affair. Structured entirely around scenes with sex. Truthfull and painful. From halfway through, every scene gets more and more intense, and for me almost ubeareable so. It almost made me throw up.
I found little more to this Criterion pick than a porno, and not a very good one, at that.
This movie did two things for me that no film has done before. It put me to sleep and it put me off sex for a while. I found it neither pornographic nor artistic. I had really high hopes for this one. It was good at telling a story of all consuming obsession with social commentary, but I found that passion very hard to believe. They had a sexual relationship, I just wish I had seen something more. Maybe I'm dense.
