I don't remember any Shakespeare quotes. But I think we're supposed to like Clooney and Zeta Jones because they're beautiful people. The trick worked on me, at any rate (at least as far as Catherine Zeta Jones is concerned).
The opening title sequence and Paul Adelstein's performance as Wrigley were great. Everything else, not so much. Not so much at all.
Some clunky moments but overall I enjoyed this. Just when you think it's all getting too saccahrine Joel Coen injects the story with several doses of cynicism and irony. Razor sharp script and razor sharp performances to boot. Worth a watch.
Why were they quoting shakespeare and WHY the hell is nobody even remotely likeable in this film?
Jones was very likeable. But everything just felt pretentious and over-blown. I was with most of the critics on this one.
"WE GONNA MAKE YOU LAUGH, WE GONNA MAKE YOU CRY, BUT MOST OF ALL, WE GONNA NAIL YOUR ASS!!!" Classic!
Podrán decir lo que quieran, pero de que es entretenida y bastante divertida, lo es. Que no sea una película tan seria, no quiere decir que sea mala. Merece más crédito del que normalmente le dan.
**1/2 There are only two scenes in INTOLERABLE CRUELTY that remind us that the movie is a Coen brothers effort: the opening sequence and Herb Myerson's character. That's it. The rest of the film could have been directed by a dozen Hollywood yes men. It's not shameful though, I liked numerous dialogues of the film, the performance of the actors, the dogs, George Clooney's teeth, the marriage in kilt, Catherine Zeta-Jones's wardrobe and my sister-in-law. It's light, harmless and already forgotten. As Parmenides of Elea used to say to his followers: "Wise is the man who keeps silent when his wife is talking but wiser is the woman who keeps silent when her man is away".
A classic case of the Coens compromising their considerable creativity for commercial concerns.
A few nice Coen touches but really one of their worst pieces. Hugely disappointing.
