When the film was reaching the end, I actually thought: oh well, lame and way too predictable. But that final shot just blew me away with cuteness. Clark Gable is disarmingly sweet and Claudette Colbert acts with such conviction and personality. They certainly are my favourite couple on Screwball history.
Claudette Colbert described this has beeing the worst picture she had ever made, and couldn't she be more wrong. A wonderful and delicious comedy, that entices us from the very begining. A movie that became a model for most any romantic comedy made afterwards. Wonderful.
This 5-time Oscar winning film that gave birth to screwball is hilarious and wonderful. With a small budget, a story from a magazine, two leads who hated each other, and a wonderful director magic was made. And as an added bonus, undershirt sales went down 35% after the film because Gable didn't wear one in the film!
i definitely see why this won over cleopatra. if only the oscars could have sense like that now. what a delightful, charming, witty movie. i really believed that they were crazy for each other. i go crazy myself when in black and white movies, the actresses' eyes sparkle when they cry and i held onto my heart when colbert's own eyes sparkled. gable had a gleam in his eyes too that matched the film's starry quality.
A lovely movie, but a bit slow. I really liked the famous hitchhiking scene.
Everytime i see it, i love it even more. What a wonderful acting, direction and script.
Gotta love Claudette Colbert. And Clark Gable is sympathetic *and* funny. "Quit bawling! Quit bawling!!"
I think this even beats Bringing up Baby (a masterpiece). This is simply the best screwball comedy I have seen and is for sure one of my favourite films. Gable and Colbert really shine in their roles and Capra is a master at telling stories like this.
Les 5 principaux oscars (meilleur film, acteur, actrice, réalisateur et scénario) du lourd donc pour un modèle du genre
A career-best performance from Gable in Capra's excellent comedy road movie. I'm usually suspicious of movies that win loads of Oscars but I think this one thoroughly deserved the Big 5 it got...
Clark Gable is one of the best actors ever, Claudette Colbert is one of the worst.
Capra at his best. The chemistry between Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert is almost unparalleled, the writing is phenominal, and Capra's direction is fantastic as usual.
This is wonderful film making right here. Gable and Colbert have a chemistry on screen that appears so natural and so real that its impossible not to be captivated. The film looks stunning, particularly the lighting which is gorgeous. A wonderfully written screenplay that is both slyly funny and downright heartwarming; it isn't hard to see why Capra is regarded as he is. Loved it.
The moment that stands out the most for me is when they are in the rented room together with the sheet hung across the walls to separate them and Clark Gable is describing falling in love but the camera is focused on Colbert who is silently falling in love with him and her heart is breaking . . . an incredible Colbert moment!!!!!
Hilarious! It deserved all the Oscars it got. Iconic dialogue and scenes that bring images of Loony Tunes to mind.
Amazing screwball comedy that works at almost every single level. who could ask for better when Frank Capra is behind the lens & both Colbert and Gable keep charm and laughs all the way through the show.
