At the beginning of the film, Hoffman's directing, in parallel with his character, is insecure and awkward. So much so, that during the first ten minutes I nearly shut it off. But as the characters grow, so too does Hoffman's directing, and we see he is indeed competent, and this is indeed a worthwhile gem. I'm glad I stuck with it.
Better than expected. Took me some time to get into the flow and find out where it was going. Best adjective for this movie: simple. However, it does deal with some complicated issues. I fancied me that there was the construction of a heterosexual relationship happening simultaneously with the deconstruction of a heterosexual relationship. Nice work, Mr. Hoffman
Thare's something weird about this movie, don't know exactly what... because it's dressed like a romantic comedy, sounds a little pretentious some times and a little cliché at others, but always doing so while presenting some interesting and delicate themes... wierd is the best way I find to describe it.
sinema kecil seperti ini memberikan pengalaman menonton yang tidak terduga. sejak awal saya tidak tahu apa yang terjadi, seperti mengikuti kehidupan diluar sinema itu sendiri.
see it, even if its a romantic-drama... " I am for you" (Hoffman, Jack Goes Boating)
Philip Seymour Hoffman makes a nice directing debut in this play adaptation which contains great performances from its four miin players, especially Amy Ryan and Daphne Rubin-Vega. http://eddieonfilm.blogspot.com/2011/02/if-you-want-to-swim-you-have-to-get-in.html
I saw the original play with Philip Seymour Hoffman in the title role. It was a gorgeous production, but aside from the nuanced acting, half the fun was the unique theatrical sensibility the director brought to the minimal, ultra-naturalistic writing. I don't know how that's going to translate in the movie: the whole thing seemed too ephemeral and delicate to be magnified on screen. Still excited to see this, though.
