Ham Fisher’s comic strip comes to the screen in this tale of Joe (Stuart Erwin), a naïve kid from the sticks boosted to boxing stardom by trainer Knobby Walsh (Jimmy Durante). Joe becomes a champ when he defeats drunkard Al McSwatt (William Cagney) — and captivates Al’s girl, Nina (Lupe Velez). Joe and Nina make a fun couple, but Nina’s lifestyle as a cabaret singer begins to interfere with Knobby’s disciplined training regimen.
