We are unable to ignore Korine's style which is quite impressive and inventive, but I had an issue trying to establish consistent substance. I did admire the fact that the film obtained a tenderness over time but I can't help but feel like Korine is an immature filmmaker trying to make mature films. I am still glad this film exists, it is progressive and would have made a remarkable short film.
Werner Herzog's performance was almost the only redeeming feature of this film for me, although Korine's camera work is often really, really beautiful.
Beautifully shot, fully original. This intimidating and bizarre work of art is, to me, a masterpiece. Pearl is a perfect person and her tragedy was harder for me to watch than anything in any Hollywood movie. This film is twisted like its director yet totally mesmerizing. Love it.
Maybe not my favorite, but definitely the greatest work of art that Harmony has yet to produce.
As someone that has recently stayed in a psych ward: I find the depiction of those with mental disorders to be spot on. This film is a lovely ode to the misunderstood and mistreated, but it does so in a very honest way. What I like about this film are the small moments of beauty that punctuate the dissonance and torment of the mentally ill. That rhythmic quality of life is captured wonderfully.
I'm a big fan of Gummo, so I expected comedy. What a surprise. This, Salo, Precious and a few other films deserve their own subgenre: punishment cinema. All take you to a subcultural place you never want to go near in real life, and force you to see every nasty bit of their landscape. Why? In Julien's case, Korine wants you to see these outcasts as modern saints (hence the motifs of sin & salvation).
harmony korine, you really piss me off with your nonsense (trash humpers???), but this was gorgeous. I get it, you do have real talent. Thanks for sharing that with me. thanks, Lee
Probably the closest thing to a cinematic ee cummings poem. Korine has a beautiful way of processing and interpreting the emotions of the misunderstood and the mistreated. I like to watch the scenes and then think "being mentally ill is like __________" based on what is going on. For instance "being mentally ill is like being hosed with freezing cold water by your father while he tells you to be a man." Dark stuff.
Even though during the spit scene with which the movie debutes you might find yourself making faces , Julien DB is definitely worth watching
I loved the even more hectic style of shooting then by Gummo, it's just a shame it was obvious all the time what was the key plot of the movie that was or should be revealed only in the last 10 minutes. Some really great scenes and some that I felt were too artificial.
