Synopsis

A wealthy family of Calcutta’s industrial bourgeoisie is vacationing in Darjeeling, at the foot of Mt. Kanchenjunga, the second highest peak of the Himalayas. The family members are dominated by the figure of the father, Indranath, who expects all of them to obey his will. Several long walks, embellished by long conversations, sow various seeds of crisis into the family’s midst: for example, a couple breaks up when the younger daughter rejects the staid, respectable engineer her father wants her to marry. Instead, she seems attracted to Asok, a young student of modest means who has the nerve to refuse the job that the elderly Indranath offers him. –Satyajit Ray Film and Study Center

After graduation, Ray went to work as a commercial artist for the D. J. Keymer advertising agency in Calcutta. It was here that he was assigned to draw illustrations for Bhibuti Bashan Bannerjee’s classic autobiographical novel of Bengal life, Pather Panchali. Though he’d never had any formal cinematic training, he determined then and… read more

"so much said with so few words, so much done with so few actions". Being able to portray social changes, domestic observations/issues and ideas of what is in store for future ... with his tools being only a handful of people taking a walk in Darjeeling, can only be the work of a genius.

My second favorite Satyajit Ray film. Created with such passion and care, its no wonder why S. Ray was one of the most admired filmmakers in cinema.
