The original 'Black Book' (ZWARTBOEK). A manic pace and daring sensibility with a dash of feminism. A Paul Verhoeven comedy with a strange sense of timing, serving well the dramatic overtones.

Monique van de Ven shines in the title role, her luminous presence a strong contrast to the atmospheric corruption of turn of the century Amsterdam. Another strong piece of work from Verhoeven's Dutch period.
A Dickensian story that is a period piece reminding one of a Jane Austen heroine if she were drugged down a seedy alley in the dark of night.
