The rythm of this movie is amazing. The only thing I didn't like too much was the music, the rest is awesome.
The first film by Kitano that I ever saw, what a magical day it was when I was introduced to this lovely, sensitive piece.
I was at showing of this film when Mr. Kitano was simultaneously displaying his paintings in the lobby of the theatre. Mr. K's art depicts the secret lives of men. I wonder, his violent streaks in films are intentional transgressions against attractive men? Not implying that he is homophobic. In Kids Return, the boys' awkwardness and displaced affection portrays the repression of the Japanese society, as to Mr. K
I'm surprised no ones commented on this one as of yet, I still see it as one of Kitano's better works. Somewhat reminiscent of JSA or Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring in its heavily cyclical nature. By film's end, nothing has really changed...
