Haven't watched this in far too long. Funny, thoughtful, bizarre and touching, a great movie.
A more appropriate title would have been Masao no Natsu. Still, to me, it's Takeshi best feature so far.
A truly marvelous film. Every scene is lovingly crafted and subtly portrayed. Kitano is a master storyteller of the methodical nature of Japanese culture.
There had been a statement somewhere that Beat was coherst into making this film in order to get his name back in the good graces of his audience after years of making more violent films. It had been nearly a decade since his comedic films, then he was in a horrible motorcycle accident. This film may have been the pentacle return to his gentler side.
Very humourous and a bit sad. You can see that Kitano himself is having a great time in some of the shots, and I actually got the feeling he was truly laughing sometimes during a scene, not as a character on the film but as the director. It's a nice movie to watch.
I keep on thinking Beat should not be in this movie, it robs the brilliant child actor's empathetic performance. Could have been a touching and sad story. But with Takeshi in the film, I am constantly being reminded this is only a film. Not saying he is a lousy actor but sometimes, one got to let go.......
I laughed my tits off, I think I worried the flat above me. Also got very weepy!
i agree with purgatorio ,Mr Kitano intelligence and poetry are a treat for people who like to watch a movie and feel something in the heart ,soul and mind!
Kitano-"lite" in this case, and it works wonderfully. Outside of his auteur cycle, this is probably his most memorable work. To a lesser importance, I also found this to be the best Joe Hisaishi score for a Kitano film.
An unbelievably beautiful, touching and heart warming film without ever being overly sentimental; a masterpiece.
