Precisely.
Whereas a recent rewatch revealed how juvenile and masturbatory Volume 1 was, this has fared considerably better, with the saga moving away from a fast-paced, yakuza/samurai pastiche to the quieter, more mature drama of spaghetti westerns and film noir. Now more intimate and dialogue-driven, Volume 2 manages to bring out the humanism in all these genres. Much more satisfying and likeable - the superior instalment.
wonderful movie. it introduces such a number of dynamically strange and unique characters while NONE of them disappoint.
I just watched both volumes again and I think I've changed my mind and decided that this is the better of the two. The darker, more realistic tone is a nice contrast to the cartoon-like first volume. This is also reflected in the cinematography which is more muted and washed out in comparison to volume one's bright colours. The saga as a whole is a hugely entertaining, if not quite great epic.
Liked this one even less than the first one. It's artificial in a totally uninteresting way: the characters, for example, exist only to fit into Tarantino's oratory fanboy syntax. And not to mention, for a QT film, it's hideously shot.
Adult cartoon on crack! The insides of Tarantinos mind laid bare, disturbing and awesome in equal measure
Someone should teach me that Eagle move. That should benefit me for my world domination plan.
There's that one scene - Bill makes sandwiches for Bibi and they tell Kiddo how Emilio the goldfish died- these five minutes sum up so perfectly why Tarantino deserves every fucking piece of the hype. Vol. 2 is flawless.
After vol 1 it was always going to be downhill, the ending was too short and sharp
I've been watching this two-parter more and more now and I realize I didn't appreciate it at first. I used to call it a "great flawed film". Now, it's just flat-out great. Storytelling brilliance, the epic scope, the perfect use of music. It's really a tour-de-force job of directing. The only flaw is some of the dialogue, but then I didn't appreciate the "movieness" of it -- of the whole project in fact.
For people who bitch about each volume being so differant contextually, it was because Tarantino intended for it to be a single epic-length release. Would have been amazing as a single feature.
Although its not wise to compare each volume, but, Volume 2 is better than Volume 1. The Pai Mei sequence is classic
The black mamba, the scenes with Pai Mei, the flashback in b&w, Uma Thurman. Unfortunately, the last 30 minutes between Uma and Carradine are flawed because Tarantino took up his bad habits : long and empty dialogues without any empathy. It's crystal clear Tarantino never felt once in his life the feelings his characters are supposed to have.
Most overrated Tarantino movie. A series special cascades that makes it because of Tarantino extensive knowledge of b-movies. Recent Japanese imitators did much worse. Still, where's are the intelligent dialogues and the nice story craft here ?
My favorite of the two volumes. Carradine was absolutely magnetic. He embodied and paid off every bit of anticipation I had for the character. So cool. So deadly. Uma Thurman has never been more bad ass or stunningly beautiful.
