Joan Greenwood and Dennis Price are the real stars of this film. As amusing as Guinness is, his performance(s) is more of a stunt.
Love this film! I think I appreciate its wit even more the second time around. I was inspired to watch it after seeing Alec Guinness in Star Wars.
I saw this many years ago as a teenager and had fond memories of it. Seeing it again recently, it occurred to me that the casting of Alex Guinness as all eight doomed relatives was little more than a joke. Now I can only see it as a precursor to all the bad Eddie Murphy and Tyler Perry movies where they played multiple roles. Even the "twist" ending was a letdown, after seeing many films that do it better.
A hell of a lot of fun. Politely rotten enjoyably dark with Alec Guinness playing eight different roles. Well worth the watch!
A great nasty pleasure. Everyone goes on about Alec Guinness, but he's largely set dressing in this one -- the movie really belongs to Dennis Price and the sublime and damnably sexy Joan Greenwood.
Way ahead of its time. A hilarious dark comedy. Sir Alec Guiness plays a half-dozen roles to the tee. And a great twist ending.
Funny and clever at the same time. Amazing performances by Dennis Price and Alec Guinness... oh my, what a perfectly-paced movie!
My ex husband did three lovely things for me... one of those was to introduce me to this film. So many only know Guinness from Star Wars. They need to look further... he has a huge library of films.
... a dish served cold. One of the surest, most delicately realised black comedies with rapier cruelty and wit dressed-up in a most polite veneer. Dennis Price's finest hour and a half.
I wanted to celebrate Joan Greenwood but Doctor Lemonglow has already done so, eloquently.
