My hero Eagle Pennell had ambitions to make a film like this, title and all, in the 1980s, but was too far along the slow descent into alcoholism when he came up with the idea. I hope to see Edel’s version eventually – I highly doubt he stole the idea from Pennell – as I was a huge fan of Der Baader Meinhof Komplex. As a director who idolizes Pennell and would love to make films out of his failed projects, I would like to gain inspiration from Edel’s version and use it to turn some other Shakespeare masterpiece into a Texan epic.
