Kirikou et les Bêtes Sauvages

Kirikou And The Wild Beasts was one of the first films I added to my “must watch” list on this site, and I’m so pleased that I was finally able to see it. The animation is two-dimensional, yet more vivid than many of its modern, three-dimensional counterparts. West African culture is beautifully sculptured and illustrated through the film’s heartwarming colors, patterns, and of course, folklore. I’ve never cinematically met such a smart, witty, and fast character as Kirikou. Kirikou’s ideas, morals, and adventures teach viewers of all sizes the values of patience, care, and logical thinking. Like the villagers’ song says: Kirikou is not big, but he saves us. I highly recommend Kirikou to anyone who is into animation, folklore, and/or anthropology. I also found it to be a helpful film if you are learning French, and would like to try and practice sans subtitles. The soundtrack is wonderful and engaging as well!
