Daoud Abdel Sayed was born in Cairo in 1946. He began his film career as an assistant director to Youssef Chahine. The Vagabonds (1985) established him as a pioneer of New Realism in Egyptian cinema; since then he has made a number of commercially successful films. The Land of Fear (1999) won Best Arabic Film at the Cairo International Film Festival.
