though marginally a murder mystery, "klute" is more concerned with the balance between sex and intimacy. unlike most hollywood cinema, the former isn't always an expression of the latter. and unlike a lot of underground cinema, "klute" is never fatalistic about the potential to have both. many joke about jane fonda these days, but in 1971 she was a hell of an actor - as smart and charming as the movie itself.
Un film que destaca en su cinematografía, la actuación de Jane Fonda y un excelente sounstrack. Un thriller que se vuelve soso en momentos pero que mantiene una atmosfera constante de intriga, me recordo los viejos films de detectives...
Having recently watched one of its 70s-era American cousins (*Night Moves*), I'd say this one exceeds that film in almost every department. Solid, sometimes deceptively simple neo-noir with occasional whiffs of giallo (the use of the subjective camera throughout, as well as the rooftop skylight scenes that recall, at least briefly, David Hemmings in his apartment in *Profondo Rosso*).
In my fantasies the 70s are a decade of narcissistic self-exploration and Klute embodies this fantasy. Two people thrust together in an "encounter group," exploring each other, delving into each other. The tagline - Jane Fonda is Bree Daniels - is true. Fonda seems fully herself, plunging into the depths of her role, her stridency a mask to hide the desperate vulnerability, the search for an answer that will work.
Pakula's best. Fantastic cinematography and performances, especially Fonda's, of course. Excellent, excellent film.
this crime movie started nice & exciting - but after a while it fell apart & ended up kind of pretty melodramatic movie about a woman's love-life problem..!
It's hard to imagine that today's Academy would be able to look past the off screen controversy surrounding Fonda and the outright unlikability of her character to recognize the fearless performance. One of the most deserved Best Actress awards ever.
"an extended close up of fonda as she listens to the tape of a friend's murder is very similar to falconetti's close-ups in carl theodor dreyer's silent classic, the passion of joan of arc." - from the journals of jean seberg, mark rappaport, 1995
I once read an interview with the Donald S. wherein he claimed that the sex scene in Klute was filmed about twenty-minutes after he and Fonda had actually "fucked", was the word he used, I believe.
i'm sitting here trying to type something about jane fonda's performance and i can't bring myself to write anything. it's just so brilliant and mesmerizing and difficult to describe...i don't even know where to begin
One star for Jane Fonda (acting, wardrobes, hairdo, shes so authentic!), one star for the scoring&story , two stars for the cinematography. Excellent cinematography, the best I've seen in this genre. The story was okay.
