I had no idea where this film was going until the climax, then it's like the floodgates opened...and everything made sense.
An allegory for the political discontent and revolution that would manifest itself later in the decade with events such as the Prague Spring, protests against the Vietnam war and May '68. All the symbolism is there, if you look close enough.
Polanski's first thriller is good enough, and has elements that he will build on further and in much more dire circumstances. Here we get an insight into the psychological male mind when it is confronted or threatened by another in the presence of a woman. There is some excellent cinematography, its jus that the premise is lazy and poorly set up. Otherwise, a good start.
Suspense established through the setting and the tension between the two male leads.
A fascinating psychological drama about sexual rivalry. Great performances, taut direction by the master Polanski in his feature debut.
Is it Just me, or are the subtitles on the criterion release of Knife in The Water a little off? Is it just that each line is spaced out? I can't figure it out, but it reminds me of the less than spectacular subtitles in Cleo from 5 to 7. Only it's easier to follow the french.
Three people on a boat. Both men become soon one as Andrzej develops the habit to copy and repeat every move of the young stranger. Krystyna, on the contrary, is clearly described by the director as double: the severe wife with glasses of a Polish bourgeois who changes into a buxom naiad as soon as she leaves the shore. Three people on a boat: a man and two women. Note that Polanski dubbed the young man. Masterpiece.
I salute the genus!! to hell with this media and ppl who care only for financial gain, to stupid to appreciate the genius he is, we should boycott Swiss!!.
It took a second viewing for me to really appreciate this movie. Its simplicity can be deceiving at first, but there is so much unspoken tension between all three characters and the plot unravels in a fresh and novel way until the unexpected ending. Crisp cinematography and a jazzy score also complement the story well.
