I've had a very different response to this one. It's hard to describe why I loved it the 2nd time, but I did. GRADE: A-
Exceptional filming! Some scenes are real gems... The way Gus Van Sant succeeds in immersing us in the "long lonely journey" of a lost man is absolutely genius...
@Z.Bart. agree. few films i've seen of recent times have tried so hard to place us in the 'subjective' mindset of another individual. Brown Bunny hada similar effect on me. Gus Van Sant's more 'arty' films are hit and miss to me, but Last Days is a winner.
A rejoinder to certain writers below. You're missing the brilliance of the film, which lies in its full-scale immersion in the reality of a tortured man. The film lacks focus because Blake lacks focus. The film meanders because Blake meanders. To complain about "useless loose ends" is to deny the film its very potency. To expect "entertainment" from this set of facts is outlandish.
A definitively difficult movie for me to get through. Although I would consider Gerry amongst my favourite films of all time, this one lacked the focus and overall atmospherics that Gerry achieved so well. The type of movie I should enjoy but I found simply meandered on endlessly with all sorts of useless loose ends thrown in without much explanation.
Van Sant reaches a profound level of truth simply by observing characters in potentially banal situations and refraining from making obvious judgments. The results here are not nearly as powerful as in Elephant, but more interesting than in Gerry. Michael Pitt is fantastic in an almost wordless role. About halfway through, I was worried the film would make the mistake of not giving the audience any music to understand Blake or his appeal. I'm glad that wasn't the case.
I feel that this is a perfect film. It is pure cinema. Van Sant tells us nothing and shows us everything.
for me along with elephant & paranoid park, these are three of the masterpieces of recent years. i don't think there is anything like them. they are are the works of a master.
Blake walks And walks And walks And walks And walks. And he plays guitar too. Plus, Kim Gordon shows up. How nice. Don't be put off by the idea of a biopic. This one doesn't fade away. It just burns you out.
It's a long lonely journey from death to birth. Van Sant retells the last days in the life of 'rock-and-roll cliché' Blake (inspired by Cobain). A fragile yet beautiful epitaph written on celluloid.
