i travelled to beijing 4 years ago during the New Year time, so it was a bit of sad to see what was approx happening in the life of those people i saw at the train station.
so profoundly moving. i will never be able to look at a train in the same way again.
So well shot I became convinced it was staged- until fists started flying. The filmmakers use the strength of documentary to immerse in ways a traditional film cannot.
Qin's father has the saddest face I have ever seen. The mind boggles at how the director managed to pull this off.
Powerful. Raw. Emotive and overwhelming. A brilliant capture of the complicated lives that many migrant workers (and otherwise) live in China. Absolutely excellent.
Gorgeous camera work and an extremely effective story, this is an important piece of work and in my opinion a breakthrough in documentary filmmaking.
Globalization as a devestator of the family unit. A culture under siege. A staggering documentary looking at the mass exodus from villiage to city in chasing the almighty yuan. Moving and unsettling. The sequence when the daughter openly rebels against her father and breaks the 'fourth wall" very affecting. A late starting industrial/capitalistic revolution out of control.
a great documentary/family drama with some of the most beautiful hand-held cinematography I've ever seen. Lixin Fan has made a perfect documentary, one that genuinely moves me without tacky music or sappy editing.
This has to be one of the best documentaries I have seen in years. Truly terrifying.
Effective on many levels, but for me it really kicks in with the intimate portrait and travails of this one family.
Excellent documentary. I was lucky enough to catch this on the big screen. Hope to find a DVD release one day soon.
I want to watch this documentary so bad... :( im in Mexico, and I been following news of releases or screenings but nothing.. any help?
Compelling doc about Chinese migrant workers uses intimate family drama as microcosm of greater societal issues.
This is the kind of film that inspires me to make my own documentaries. Lixin Fan just disappears among the millions of Chinese migrants. He and his camera become invisible as I am lucky enough to be siting in my comfy chair, watching this all happen. Lixin Fan, if you're reading this... thanks for showing me how it's done. You inspire me.
Oh my God Auteurs you are truly amazing! I just love you. If it wasn't for you I might never got to hear of this wonderful human story, now I must watch it. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
