Saw this beautiful film the night before the Earthquake in Japan, went to sleep with images of the Japanese sea in my mind and woke up to images of a devastated Japan....
"Happiness comes only through effort". I discovered a very subtle artist who is clearly at the root of modern cinema. 5 stars
One of my personal favorite movies, LS is touching, moving, heartbreaking and gentle without being sappy or melodramatic. The mise-en-scene is beautifully layered, suggesting how society represses and compresses the independence of Hara's heroine and the performances are lovely. Ozu is a poet and this movie, along with TOKYO STORY, shows why.
One of the most purely poetic, beautifully emotional films ever crafted. Ozu was an absolute genius.
I fell in love with this emotional, beautiful portrait of life. Ozu was a true artist.
I love this movie so much. I can't really put it into adequate words. It literally gets better every time I watch it. I bow to Ozu, one of the greatest artists who ever lived.
And I thought Tokyo Story was good. This is my favorite Ozu as well. Nearly cried at the apple scene, and movies never make me cry.
Beautiful, touching and intimate. I love that Ozu shows just as much respect and reverence for inanimate objects as for his characters. Locations and objects are given onscreen time and allowed to "react" to the events (a magazine falling over, a clock striking). Chishu Ryu is just adorable and drew me in from his first scene. However, like Setsuko Hara, his smiley exterior belies complex acting and real emotion.
This film begins with pure contemplative images, but They are put in a very virtous way, and for me, one the most beautiful and talented introductory scenes. Then when the problems emerge the images get a melancholic feeling, the images are filled with emotions, maybe from the characters but also from your own emotions, the images obtain a new meaning.
Late Spring becomes consistently more involving from start to finish, provides great insight into life, love and happiness, never ceases to surprise or amaze and all while never hitting a false note or resorting to clichés or contrivances. To find one of these qualities in a film is rare. To find all is nothing short of an artistic miracle.
