Yeah. I liked a lot of individual elements (certain performances/shots/scenes/etc), but without organization, we do get a bit of a mess.
"We're survivors. We control the fear. And without the fear, we are all as good as dead. Do you understand? Do you?" -Forrest Bondurant
Solid story with a great cast. Gory at parts and action filled but disappointed with Gary Oldman and how little he had to do in this film.
An aimless and predictable crime drama, that verges on being quite dull, if not for the lead performances, which are actually very good. Supporting characters however, played by good actors, are set up, and subsequently wasted. Whereas Guy Pierce, whose one dimensional 'bad cop,' unfortunately just plays like a camp pantomime villain. Like all Hillcoat's films, this teased promise & ambition, but failed to deliver.
I shouldn't have been so surprised at how much I liked Lawless, John Hillcoat is more than a worthy director. I'm a fan of both The Proposition and The Road and now I'm of his third offering Lawless.I thought the cast was great, I even liked Shia but the person who stood out the most was Guy Pearce, he was terrific as the bad guy. Loved the soundtrack and I even think that Nick Cave did a great job with the screenplay. He plays a good dead person too.
"Shia LaBeouf Gets His Ass Kicked!!!" That should be the tagline, plastered in every poster, trailer or cereal box in capital letters. "Lawless" itself is rather dull, a very pedestrian story kept afloat by a stellar cast. Guy Pearce's preening and sadistic villain is the sole memorable achievement of the movie.
Somewhat predictable but still every minute of it was awesome. I really don't get all the complaints. Even freaking Shia was good in it, Chastain, Hardy and Pearce were just great. I can watch any damn thing Nick Cave writes and never be disappointed by that mad man.
Pretty mundane. Where The Proposition made a lot out of a little, Lawless is a bit overstuffed and lifeless. It should work, because it's shot nicely and the acting is great. There's just not a lot here that hooked me. Someone below said "episodic" and that's a good word for it. Sorta just ambles along like Tom Hardy's character, mumbling and "yawp"-ing and lurching to a halt eventually. I'm not mad at it but...eh.
DELICIOUS, what a perfect cast as well. im not a fan of this genre as a rule but this film goes to show that a well crafted story can transcend genres. i can't get over the performances, hollywood is in good shape if these actors get more work. i'm very happy this film exsists.
Another solid outing from John Hillcoat, this film was beautifully shot, well scored and acted. I figured that Shia LaBeouf would have been the weak link in this movie but I was surprised by the competence of his performance. I would have loved some more screen time for Gary Oldman but I can't complain with what we got.
"mmm" hardy and sneering pierce are worth the ticket price. as a bonus, you'll have good music and some intense scenes (the one in the church, in particular).
Godibile
