This film is a sprawling, melodramatic mess - and it works. The performances are intense, but perfectly in context. The cinematography and the sheer size of the production is impressive - the design was also quite beautiful. The WWI scenes in particular were gigantic and complex. Overall, this romantic epic that sweeps across several decades is one effective tale.

An utter mess of a film, which demands so much of the audience whilst giving them so little. I had almost no interest in sitting through it all, but sadly I had nothing better to do.
