i don't know what to rate this. the cinematography was gorgeous with its dark saturation and nightly tones especially when it highlighted the shack. i really admire the craft taken to develop this film. my real complaint but a huge detraction for me is that i wish i could be left with some resonance. to be honest, i'm not going to pretend i connected to the film as an entirety but pieces of it were inspiring.
Not as gut-wrenchingly great as le Fils but still, it being a Dardenne film and all, very good.
Premier film que je vois des frères Dardenne.. certainement pas le dernier. Du calibre de Ken Loach. J'en tremble encore.
Dramatic realism without the cynicism. I am in love with the Dardenne brother. Genius. These films represent such an uncompromising and pure cinema. No score/music, yet the drama resonates and near the end there is definitely an edge-of-the-seat factor. This one even has a chase scene. Eat it Hollywood.
On the subject of selling their child to the black market: "Sorry. Don't worry, we'll have another one." On employment: "Only fuckers work."
The events are predictable but well executed, the character portrait and the performances are what matters, and the prolonged chase scene at the end was very subtly suspenseful.
I agree, there is no need to translate the title of this gem.Anyway, another powerful film from the Dardenne brothers in which every scene matters. Realistic, with great performances that leaves us with various emotions to sort through.
The first Dardenne Bros. film I've seen--I picked it up at random at Blockbuster. I'm at a loss to describe this one--so meticulously directed, so flawlessly acted. Great story. Awesome film. Well worth watching; well worth your patience.
This film proves that even a social realist drama can end poetically. The power of this film is undeniable and enthralls.
