i thought the fact that natalie portman at such a tender age was involved in this movie was kind of disturbing. and also the fact that she's too precocious. (if there is ever such a thing called too precocious)

This is real chemistry, with Bjork's Venus As A Boy in the background.

Personally, my only "viewing expectations" were of something with a reasonable amount of intelligence and I was completely let down. Everyone overacts, the script is sloppy to the point of idiocy and thematically the damn thing is all over the place. Never let it be said that Luc Besson can't shoot one hell of an action scene, though.

This isn't even to say that there's nothing redeemable about the movie-Natalie Portman has a few great moments, especially the one where she's walking past her apartment after her family gets killed, and as I said earlier there are some great action shots. But otherwise...I dunno. "Weirdly Stupid" is the only real adjective I can use to describe most of it.

If your viewing expectations are limited to straightforward action, this film is not for you. Action is only the pretense here. Because of this, I love it. I hope those who haven't yet seen it will feel something similar. It's incredibly beautiful and I still get goosebumps thinking of Reno's final scene. I'm sorry for those disappointed but I think film viewing is best when you throw out all prejudgment.

Yes, we know it's an unorthodox romance film - yes, it's got Oldman in fine form ("I DO NOT HAVE TIIMUH FOR THIS MICKEY MOUSE BULLSHIT" / "EEEEEVRRRRYYYYYYOOOOOOONE") - but that just ain't 'nough to save this one. Barely above the "worth watching" benchmark. ★★.5

The relationship between Reno and Portman was a bit akward(creepy) at times, but otherwise the film was enjoyable.

It was meant to be creepy -- hints of an inappropriate sexual relationship between an adult and a child should be unsettling to any rational, normative, individual.... BUT that was meant to be the point... We never find out the true nature of their relationship (it is never explicitly spoken about) before Leon dies in the final scenes but there are hints throughout the narrative that allow the viewer to make his/her own subjective interpretation. This is art.

"BUT that was meant to be the point"----What was meant to be the "point"?----- I don't think I need to see relationships between adult men and pre-teen girls in a movie to derive that "point"----- "but there are hints throughout the narrative that allow the viewer to make his/her own subjective interpretation."---And?To what conclusion? Sexual relationships with children are ok? Is that the subjective interpretation you are referring to?

I have to agree with what Hedonist has stated. The film would not be the same without the delicate and unspoken ambiguity of Leon and Mathilda's relationship. In fact, that is the core of the film. The subjectivity that Hedonist mentions is exactly why some people, such as myself, may see this as a non-gratuitous, emotionally-complex film, while others, such as yourself, may feel creeped out.

After watching this obsessively in my youth, it's encouraging to return and find the elements I loved completely untarnished by time. The wholly broken characters, the innocence and developing trust and the stark violence give this otherwise lightweight film gravitas. Elements I didn't appreciate earlier - ice-cool camera work, blossoming sexuality and forbidden love, Danny Aiello - make me very glad I came back.
