Ophuls was the director of exchange, the circularity of goods and feelings. But it was the space between these exchanges -in a word, the desires driving exchange- that engaged him; the idle, knowing talk, misunderstandings, lives of people trapped by the exchange process, the movement of the camera to introduce each exchange. "Liebelei" is a masterpiece of Ophuls's art, where the space becomes the essence of life.

This 1933 Germany language film by Max Ophuls bears touchstones common to his more well known French 50's films, including a fluid, mobile camera, society scandal and mores, and love gained, lost, and made tragic by ill communication and suicide. Hard to find, but available if you dig.
