Synopsis

Joe Gastineau lives in Juneau, Alaska, where his life has been stuck in neutral for about 25 years.When he was young, Joe was involved in an accident on a fishing boat that led to the death of two crewmembers, and he’s never recovered from the blow.When Joe meets Donna De Angelo, however, he starts to come out of his shell. Donna is a singer who goes from job to job, wherever she can get work. Donna and Joe become attracted to each other, and her example leads Joe to take a job on a boat again. However, just as Joe’s life is starting to get back on track, his ne’er-do-well half-brother Bobby arrives to ask Joe a favor. –Thessaloniki International Film Festival

John Sayles

John Thomas Sayles (born September 28, 1950) is an American independent film director and screenwriter who frequently plays small roles in his own and other indie films.

Sayles was born in Schenectady, New York, the son of Mary (née Rausch), a teacher, and Donald John Sayles, a school administrator. He was raised Catholic and took to labeling himself “a Catholic atheist”. Both of Sayles’ parents were of half Irish descent.

He attended Williams College, where a small incident provided an inkling as to his future career. In 1972, while participating in the school’s biannual trivia contest, Sayles’ team was tied with another after eight hours, forcing the game’s first sudden death overtime. Sayles was able to cite a particular line of dialogue from the 1960 film The Time Machine, thus clinching that semester’s championship.

I haven't watched this for eons; since it came out probably. I can just remember my boyfriend at the time claiming David Strathairn as his man crush after watching it.
