Humbert Humbert: "What drives me insane is the twofold nature of this nymphet, of every nymphet perhaps, this mixture in my Lolita of tender, dreamy childishness and a kind of eerie vulgarity."
Despite good directing and the contribution of Nabokov himself to the script, this is a great example that show us some books should not be adapted to screen. Someone else should have been casted for the role of Humbert instead of James Mason. Peter Sellers was brilliant as always.
definitely not Kubrick 's best.Starts off good but in the end I hated all the characters, boring and not enjoyable
Decepção. O livro do Vladimir Nabokov é genial.. o meu preferido.
Humbert lacked common emotional responses that would have further displayed his affection/obsession towards Lolita and the score was a bit over dramatic at times. Introduced me to the marvelous creature that Peter Seller appears to be.
It's not popular opinion, but I think that Kubrick catched book's atmosphere. And Peter Sellers in whole movie and specially in the opening sequence is hilarious.
Expertly paced and wholly unique. Deep, dark and demented but never loses it's sense of humor. I love the characters, although this may not be Kubrick's best direction of actors. There are a few awkward moments (beyond those which appear to be intentionally that way) that make me wonder if he wasn't just messing with the audience. In many ways this is a MUCH smarter film than his others, or maybe just the most snide.
The first time I watched it was when I bought the MGM laserdisc. I laughed at every joke. I don't know about you haters, but it works for me.
very good film with extremely annoying characters. how is this possible? even the way they speak bothers me.
um filme bom com personagens detestáveis. como pode? até o jeito deles falarem me irrita! bah.
I love the book of Nabokov in such a form, that I don't want to see never a film based on it... I prefer always the book instead of the film :-(
Priceless. Some moments are just cinematic pearls. Great conversion from book to screen.
I wish there was a way to see the orginal cut. I've been rewatching all of Kubrick's stuff and personally Lolita seems a little (stylistically) out of place. There are a few shots that make you say "ahh, not that's Kubrickian" but it definately has a different feel. Man Peter Sellers is an amazing actor.
I would argue this film is not about the pedaphile professor Humbert (James Mason)'s affection for a young girl but about the coming of age Lolita, Sue Lyon. Witnessing the transformation in Lolita from her childhood fascination of Humbert both as a father figure and male to abandoning him when she discovered boys of her own age. The rage, disgust, and contempt followed suit, not surprisingly. The girl grew up.
@Keely, I agree about this film... can't quite make up my mind on it. Re-watching it, there are of course some marvelously subtle Kubrick snapshot-cinematic moments, and the Quilty scenes are so full of double-triple voyeuristic gazes it's unbelievable. It's a quality film, but not my favourite for all of that...
