I think I love this film for the wrong reasons. I understand that Rohmer was pretty conservative and valued values highly, but I read the film as a man finding an escape from the daunting social institutions of marriage and work in the form of Chloe, who leads a rather unrestricted and sexually free lifestyle. However, he finally succumbs to the power of these dominant institutions in society in an act of pragmatism (justified I believe by the brief dialogue on polygamy between the protagonist and Chloe) and returns to institution, believing in the comfort and security it can provided regardless of however stifling and repressive it may be.

I am an immoral bastard.
