I created a group on Facebook: 'The delightful universe of Pierre Étaix'. His movies are so unique and worthy of all attention they can get. Please come see and join us there. And for Tati fans, check out my other group: I'd like to be part of the Mr Hulot universe, even as a cardboard cut out.
With an almost Keaton-esque delivery (minus the physicality), Tati makes this a charmy and smart film without any real plot.
This is observational humor in all its glory, where the plot is non existant and the slapstick is merely used to reaffirm our summertime idiosyncrasies.
Like all the great Tati films, not necessarily laugh out loud funny, but the kind of humor that leaves a smile on your face the whole way through. Sublime.
Instead of a few fall-on-the-floor-till-you're-out-of-breath laughs that highlight many comedies, it constantly bombards you with charm and small, smart laughs that make for a more satisfying movie.
Jacques Tati's comic attack exposes the resort — supposedly a place devoted to leisure and fun — as the domain of the dull, the monotonous, the dead.
M. Hulot, with his crumpled cap and stiff-legged gait, is instantly endearing. His uniqueness is only enhanced by the backdrop of caricature-like characters. The subtlety, timing and intricacy of the humour greatly rewards an attentive observer. The film had a disarming innocence, which was accentuated by the idyllic location; framed and frozen forever in a postcard...
It took me a while to get into this film, but once it was a quarter in, I was smitten. This is just as good as any of the Tati films, filled with bold visuals, and inovative concepts. A truely endearing comedy.
The moment when Hulot is dancing with the girl, and stops to turn up the volume on the record player - I don't know why but I'll remember that forever.
Another amiable comedy from director/star Jacques Tati - the first to feature his classic character Mr. Hulot. There are a handful of brilliant comic moments, but they are surprisingly few and far between - it's too slow-paced and easy-going to generate the energy it needs to be the comedy classic of its reputation. Tati would have greater success with later Hulot films, particularly 'Playtime'.
One of the truly great films, its simplicity is serious a warmhearted romp through a venerable film maker...
