Astonishing masterpiece. Minimal, poetic, beautiful, and remarkable in the way it expresses itself. Sensational central performance by Makiko Esumi.
Haven't seen so many beautiful still camera shots in one film. This film has a sense of serenity that is arguably unparalleled. Also, this is a great tribute to Ozu's style of film making.
Kore-eda never gives in to forced over-dramatic sentimentality, his films quietly unfold and seem to live and breathe as if they've a life of their own..
A masterful feature film debut 4 Kore-eda,the 1st film I've seen of his was Still walking(although the 1st time I heard about him was "Nobody Knows") and I got a lot of love that film.I'm gonna seek out everything I can from him that he's done.a gifted filmmaker 2 keep a eye out 4
Life and death are light and darkness in this Kore-eda's beautiful moving Caravaggio. The director knows like nobody else how to deal with this subject and above all he knows how to make his characters speak out their minds about it without saying a word.
by some fluke this is on tcm tonight. thanks, ted turner, you're still my favorite billionaire
Maborosi No Hıkari (1995) Hirokazu Kore-Eda In the opening scene an elderly woman crossing a bridge, pulls away from the future, on her way towards eternity. The visuals and words flow together and play off each other, like notes in a melody. I kept thinking while I was watching, I want to see this again someday.
This is one of my favourite films, by an underrated director. The acting is incredible, and the subtle direction is sensitive and intelligent.
