Astonishing masterpiece. Minimal, poetic, beautiful, and remarkable in the way it expresses itself. Sensational central performance by Makiko Esumi.

Haven't seen so many beautiful still camera shots in one film. This film has a sense of serenity that is arguably unparalleled. Also, this is a great tribute to Ozu's style of film making.

Kore-eda never gives in to forced over-dramatic sentimentality, his films quietly unfold and seem to live and breathe as if they've a life of their own..

Life and death are light and darkness in this Kore-eda's beautiful moving Caravaggio. The director knows like nobody else how to deal with this subject and above all he knows how to make his characters speak out their minds about it without saying a word.

it is not easy to leave the things in the past. There always are questions from our past and we can not find answers every time. It is good to see little children in this movies . They show the happy side of life.

Hard to say why I like this film so much. Watching it your whole being is still. Maybe it's the little scene when she last sees her husband and he moves sort of like The Little Tramp. Just one of those times when you know someone just plain got it right.

Maborosi No Hıkari (1995) Hirokazu Kore-Eda In the opening scene an elderly woman crossing a bridge, pulls away from the future, on her way towards eternity. The visuals and words flow together and play off each other, like notes in a melody. I kept thinking while I was watching, I want to see this again someday.

This film was like a series of beautiful picture postcards. Problem is, the scenes are so outrageously slow that it seems like maybe 20 postcards in all. On the other hand, I kinda liked it anyway. I liked the characters and cared what happened to them. And it was mighty pretty.

This is one of my favourite films, by an underrated director. The acting is incredible, and the subtle direction is sensitive and intelligent.
