Synopsis

In 1496, Juana de Castilla, daughter of the Catholic Kings, travels to Flandes to marry the Archduke Felipe de Austria, known as ‘El Hermoso’ (The Handsome) and son of the emperor Maximiliano. Even though at the beginning this marriage obeys a political decision, later on passion and desire appear beneath the couple. Juana becomes queen of Spain when her mother and her older brothers die in 1504. However, due to the pressure of being queen and the discovery that her husband has many lovers, her mental health starts getting worse. Felipe, seeing his wife in these circumstances, makes the Burgos Court to declare the insanity of Juana and recludes her in the Monastry of Las Huelgas, proclaiming himself as the king. –IMDb

Vicente Aranda (born on 9 November 1926 in Barcelona), is a Spanish film director, screenwriter and producer.

Due to his refined and personal style, he is one of the most renowned Spanish filmmakers. He started as a founded member of the Barcelona School of Film and became known for bringing contemporary Spanish novels to life on the big screen. Aranda is famous for exploring difficult social issues and variations on the theme of desire that employs the codes of melodrama.

Love as uncontrollable passion, eroticism and cruelty are constant themes in his filmography. The frank examination of sexuality is one of the trademarks of his work as can be seen in his most internationally successful film: Amantes (1990) (Lovers). —Wikipedia

Esta superproducción representa un interesante giro en la carrera de Vicente Aranda, cuya carrera se ha desenvuelto en terrenos mucho más discretos. La trama cae en los convencionalismos propios de las telenovelas y los personajes (especialmente Pilar Lopéz de Ayala, la bella protagonista) se antojan demasiado huecos y estereotipados, sin embargo, a su favor, hay que decir que es una cinta visualmente muy atractiva.
