Intriguing but uneven romantic melodrama from director Douglas Sirk. The plot is as over the top and ridiculous as you’d expect, but often manages to be far more engrossing than you’d think – most likely because of the complex characters and a fine central performance from Rock Hudson. But despite the lush Technicolor cinematography and lavish design, the weaknesses in the writing lead it to fall apart towards the end. Still, an interesting look at the storytelling of an era.
