Credit to Criterion for pulling this classic out from obscurity and making it available for a new generation, it’s certainly one of the great weepers of the ’30’s, and that it’s said to have inspired Ozu when making “Tokyo Story”, that’s just another boon to it’s legacy. Leo McCarey directs with a sensitive touch, and Victor Moore and Beulah Bondi, as an aged couple forced to separate when the Depression, and their disappointing grown children, break them apart, who spend one more night together reliving their honeymoon, are tremendously moving.

Leo McCarey’s Make Way For Tomorrow fulfilled everything that I had expected; from the total involvement of Beulah Bondi as the 70 year-old Lucy Cooper (She was in her 40’s at the time!), to the screen framing of cinematographer William C. Mellor. But what is it about watching Make Way For Tomorrow that is so difficult and poignant? I’ll tell you. It reminds us, with such clarity, how poorly we human beings treat our elderly. I was so moved by the film that I had to make a call to my mother to thank her for everything that she and my late-father had done for me! This 1937 film, in particular its subject matter, is apropos today and will continue to be until we, as a society, respect the commandment that appears at the beginning of the film: HONOR THY FATHER AND MOTHER_. I couldn’t write a film review without mentioning one of my favorite actors, Thomas Mitchell (_Stagecoach, It’s a Wonderful Life). Even though there is always a certain similarity to his characters, there is something so endearing about him. I recommend this film highly. Watch it with your family.
